Juana Gallar, MD, PhD, is Professor of Physiology and leads the Ocular Neurobiology Group of the Instituto de Neurociencias (UMH-CSIC). She has conducted research stays at the Eye Research Institute (Harvard Med. Sch.), UCSD (La Jolla, CA), UNSW (Sydney, Australia) and University Hospital of Helsinki (Finland). Additionally, she collaborates regularly with researchers and clinicians from Spain and abroad.
Using animal behavioral studies and electrophysiological recordings, as well as human psychophysical studies in healthy subjects and patients, she has contributed to much of the current knowledge on the different functional types of sensory nerves innervating the ocular surface and their contribution to ocular pain and to regulate ocular functions.
Juana’s interests also encompass investigating morphofunctional changes in ocular nerves related to aging and various pathological conditions and developing novel treatments and diagnostic tools in the field of pain and peripheral neuropathies.
